Last week I thought I would make a welcome home cake for my fiance's dad cause he was returning from a very long deployment. I didn't want to make a boring sheet cake. So I decided to make a layered ocean/beach cake. I made the cakes with a vanilla cake mix, and add a tiny bit of chocolate to make it a marble cake. It started with a medium cake pan, into a smaller one, then on top was a very small bunt. The bottom layer was meant to look like the ocean, and had gummy fish. On the little bit of space on top we frosted it so it looked like sea foam, and it went into "sand" which was actually brown sugar. the second layer was a tan color to match with the sand. then the bunt we glazed green to look like a grass covered mountain. and coming from the top of the bunt, to the ocean was waves of blue frosting to look like a waterfall.
Once we had all the frosting on we put the fish, and gummy bears, and so much more!
I also make white and dark chocolate shaped shells i had from a mold.
They Loved the cake! My fiance's mom was very happy that we made it because she was planning on buying a normal sheet cake from the store. Everything tasted great. And what they didn't know was we added a little something to it! Before frosting it, we put a layer of filling in. nothing special, just a simple cream filling. But it tasted good!

Just Starting
A little over a week ago my grandmother started helping with baking from scratch. It was first to help me get a sense of what to do if I went to a baking school, but when I went to the school I realized that it was too much money. But I was still very interested in wanting to continue baking, so we did. Right now we're only baking for friends and family. But we are using their criticism to find out what to fix, or what to keep doing.
Our first batch of cupcakes weren't even good enough to consider the first. We tried to make Chocolate cupcakes with peppermint frosting. But it was WAY to chocolaty and the frosting was almost like eating toothpaste. They looked pretty, but I was able to get a picture.
This week I made Coca-Cola Cupcakes. Which was a light chocolate cupcake which had melted marshmallows and obviously Coke. The frosting was chocolate, with coke in is as well, and chopped pecans. Which everyone loved! So it was definitely a success, and helped boost our confidence in our baking. (these I was able to get a picture of)
What cupcake we are making next is unsure, But I'm starting a welcome home cake for my fiance's father. Which I can't wait to start!
